Find real Freedom! by taking it away.

The Internet is awesome.  It connects us to the world with a single click of a button.  It lets us speak with anyone anywhere at any time and helps us stay in contact with friends and family, regardless of where they live.  It’s filled with all sorts of information, all kinds of people, communities and interests and… it’s distracting!

I don’t know about you, but whenever I sit down to work and get things done, the very moment I have the slightest problem, I turn to the Internet.  For example, I can’t remember the exact meaning of a word, so I check out the definition online.  It’s all downhill from there.

It’s like a small explosion in my mind.  I find the definition and then decide to see what’s going on the Shack, then the Library, then The Vampire Warehouse.  From there I’ll check out my favourite blogs and then see if there’s any new books out on Kindle—that I don’t have the money to buy. Immediately following this, I’ll float off to Facebook to see who’s talking about who, and then off to explore new, never-before-seen websites that have images and articles beyond my wildest dreams…

Two hours later, I’ve forgotten the definition and haven’t accomplished anything.  Fortunately, there is a bright side!  On one of my most-recent of Internet distractions adventures, I stumbled over Freedom: An Internet blocker for Windows and Mac!  For some people, it’s kind of an oxymoron because it grants you freedom by taking it away.

And I know what you’re thinking: “Eek!”  But before you run away, think of all the things that you can accomplish without the pesky Internet distracting you every second minute.  Without it you have no choice but to sit down and get that assignment done, that next chapter or that new article.

With Freedom at your side, you’ll be able to completely block all access to the Internet for up to eight hours.  After it initiates, that’s it. No more email or surfing or socializing; no more apps or messaging or chatting or IMing.  It’s all blocked, freeing your time up to get things done.  Best of all, Freedom isn’t easily disabled, like all of the similar programs and plugins that I tried.

Do I have your attention yet?  Good!  Because here’s the catch!  Freedom isn’t free.  But!  It’s really cheap, only $10, and offers a free trial.  That’s an incredibly fair price to pay, if you take all the time you’re going to save by using it into consideration.  Not to mention all the stress you’re never going to have to feel again because you didn’t get something done in time, due to time-wasted on Facebook or on Skype or in the IRC (sorry JJ :P).

Of course, you could also try and find another program that does the same job for free, just like I did, but there doesn’t seem to be anything out there that compares.  I found browser plugins, but those only work for the individual browser and I have six installed.  Not to mention the fact that there’s still email access and all of your apps and programs still connect.

I did manage to find a few other programs that can block the entire Internet, but they were all designed to restrict access from others, like someone’s kids, for example.  All I had to do to disable the program was type in a password.  That doesn’t work for me.  I have willpower issues… like, I don’t have any… like, “Oh Look, A Squirrel” Syndrome.  If I can disable the Internet blocker, I will.  And did.

And that’s why I decided Freedom’s the winner.  It takes away the temptation to cheat, enabling me to finally get some work done… on time.  Of course, if you know of a program that does the exact same thing for free, please share it!  You could be saving someone’s life.  In the meantime, check out Freedom’s website at  You’ll be glad you did.
