The tagline to this series? “Coming of age…all over the place!” Hehehe, if that doesn’t set the tone of this Netflix show, I don’t know what does!
Now, understand…I grew up with animated shows like “Family Guy”, “Ren & Stimpy”, and “South Park”…so it is RARE that a show can literally make me gasp out loud and blush in front of my television in the privacy of my own home! LOL! But “Big mouth” definitely shocked the living shit out of me! And in a good, albeit naughty, way!
Created by comedian, Nick Kroll, and featuring the talented voices of Jordan Peele, Maya Rudolph, John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, and more…this animated series takes a brutally honest look at puberty, as seen through the eyes of the kids going through it. Both male and female sides are depicted through the show’s short run of ten episodes, but those episodes cover a LOT of ground! And while you may drop your jaw multiple times at how insane, vulgar, and surprising, the show is…you can’t help but to smile to yourself and nod. “Yeah…I remember how humiliating that was. Been there, done that.”
Then again, to my younger Shackers…you might be there and are doing that now! Hehehe, in which case…I feel for you guys/girls. It’s a rite of passage. And hopefully you’ll be able to look back at this time in your life and laugh too. Don’t ever feel alone. We had to go through it too!
The thing that I really loved about this show is that it is told with ‘reality’ in mind. Puberty might be romanticized by many of us after it’s over, sure…but when you’re in the midst of it? It’s confusing. And frustrating. And downright GROSS at times. And this show doesn’t shy away from any of that, even though they’re dealing with young kids. Something that many outspoken critics of the show have ranted and raved about in an attempt to get it canceled as soon as it was released. However, there were other critics who watched the series from beginning to end and ended up praising it for its honest portrayal of the transition from childhood to adulthood in ways that most shows would be terrified to try. It’s a show that finally talks openly about things like masturbation, budding sexuality, menstruation, sexual identity and confusion, early dating, mood swings, introduction to pornography, wet dreams, and a long list of other topics that, if we’re really honest with ourselves, we can all remember experiencing at one time or another. Everything from uncontrollable erections, to worrying about your ‘size’ when compared to other boys around you, to screwing your own pillow senseless, LOL…it’s in this show! And I laughed my ass off the whole way through it! Ahhh, memories…
Naturally, the very premise of this show was met with controversy and backlash when it was first released. Because the people who scream the **LOUDEST**, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Are supposed to be seen as the voices of reason. I’m sure puberty was totally different for them, right? Either that, or they just really REALLY want to put such a traumatic experience behind them and pretend it never happened it all. In which case…plenty of Disney cartoons to download instead. So enjoy. Right? No harm, no foul. But…for those who aren’t looking to run away from the idea of budding sexuality in our formative years? “Big Mouth” is here to give it to you, raw and uncut, and with a sense of humor that can, maybe, help us take a lighter look at a truly embarrassing time in our lives. It’s something we all go through at a time when we have no one else to talk to about it. No one that we felt comfortable with, at least. I wish I had seen this in the 8th or 9th grade. I, personally, think it would have given me the courage to get to know myself a bit better. I hope it won’t make you blush too badly! Hehehe, even during scenes like this one:
But, comedy aside…there is an underlying sense of heart in this series that I think gets overlooked sometimes. They’re making fun of puberty and everything that goes with it, but…it’s also a way to say, “Hey…we understand. Hang in there.” And the awkward relationships and uncomfortable attempts at trying to understand what the hell is going on, feels almost like a peace offering from the show’s adult creators to the youth of today. I wish I could say that there was ANYTHING about this show that was ‘kid friendly’! Hahaha! Ummm…no! It’s not! BUT…if you’re reading this, and you’re figuring yourself out in high school at this very moment…then I’m going to assume that you’ve seen the site. And probably much worse. So…put your sneaky online tactics to good use and check this series out. Hehehe, you’ll find more understanding there than you will at Nifty.
Ahem…I ask for that last comment to be stricken from the permanent record! Stay in school, kids!
Anyway, here’s a trailer for the first season down below. Despite the bit of backlash the show had received initially, it has been renewed. And a second season has been greenlit to appear before the end of the year! So keep an eye out for it! And I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
