Growing up in the 80’s (I was basically one of the ‘Stranger Things’ kids, but with a Nintendo instead of a board game, hehehe!), I always considered myself a full blown addict for horror movies. Something dark, something creepy…my friends and I spent countless hours seeking these movies out as often as humanly possible. Fangoria magazine subscriptions and all that, it was the slasher era of movies, after all. And while the ‘good old days’ of horror may be behind us in many ways, there are still a few bright shining lights in the darkness every now and then that remind us of how awesome horror can be. And a few talented actors that make that light shine even brighter than most.

At only fourteen years old, the baby in a family of NINE kids, Gabriel Bateman started off with a few super DARK roles in movies, and has already built himself a pretty impressive resume on the Hollywood scene. And, as one of his co-stars, Patrick Fugit, says…he’s VERY good at being creepy! One of many reasons that I was looking forward to seeing the brand new reboot of a horror classic, “Child’s Play”, this year was Gabriel’s involvement! A movie that I highly recommend checking out when you get the chance. Because I really went in with a LOT of doubts. Chucky, the killer doll, is a horror icon, and it looked like the movie was making a lot of changes to the character, the story, the design of the doll…I was skeptical, to say the least. But…you know…horror movie…nostalgia…and a cute boy? That sounds like a winning combination to me! Hehehe! So, I gave it a shot!

I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised with the direction they took. Seriously, this is different from the original, but it’s a reboot that I thoroughly enjoyed, and I’d love to see it continue in another sequel or two. This is a great example of someone taking an older franchise and putting a unique and creative spin on it to make something eerily entertaining. So, if you had your doubts like I did…check it out. It just might surprise you too.

Both old and new trailers for “Child’s Play”…

The first time I ever saw Gabriel was in a series called “Outcast”. It was done by the creator of “The Walking Dead”, Robert Kirkman, and was centered around the premise of demonic possession. Needless to say, I was instantly creeped out by the short TEASER clip of the first episode! I mean…Jesus! Hehehe! He was amazing on that show, by the way…as well as another TV series, “American Gothic”, which was a thriller and mystery series where Gabriel played a young boy who had a rather unnatural obsession with murder and death. Yep! Like I said…CREEPY!

When asked about getting bitten by the acting bug, Gabriel said, “I think I was about nine, and my sister leak was theatrically acting in la, and I was begging my mom if I could start doing it…and she didn’t really think it was a good idea because i was really young and LA’s a big city, when she finally gave in we went and i auditioned for a commercial and i ended up booking it. that was my first role, and after that i think ‘Outcast’ was one of my first theatrical role. and it was the first role that i traveled. and after that i kind of got hooked on it and we ended up moving to la from central California.” Lucky for us, because he’s been doing some amazing things ever since!

Citing Christian Bale and Leonardo Di Caprio as some of his favorite actors, Gabriel seems to be building his talent from the influences of some major players in the industry. Talent that would prove itself, once again, in the horror movie, “Lights Out”, which was his next big project to come to theaters. Another movie that I was pleasantly surprised by when I saw it for the first time. Gabriel is a good bet if you’re looking for some new nightmare fuel! Hehehe!

The thing about Gabriel, however, is his ability to stretch his acting chops beyond the sinister and macabre roles that he started off with, also jumping into comedy, drama, and coming of age films and series that won’t have you checking around corners or for monsters under the bed. He’s also been in more family friendly gems like a remake of the beloved “Benji” franchise, and the Amazon streaming series, “The Dangerous Book For Boys”. So don’t think of him as some kind of a ‘one trick pony’. He can pretty much do it all.

A self proclaimed vegan, Gabriel is home schooled alongside his siblings, and has enjoyed making short films with the family on occasion. Films that he actually wrote himself, also expressing a desire to write and direct films of his own someday in the future.

Of course, with showbiz being the way it is, it definitely comes with it’s share of challenges too. It’s a hustle and a grind and filled with an endless amount of harsh competition. Something that Gabriel knows all too well, even with the great success that he’s garnered so far.

When asked if he ever has to worry about facing rejection, Gabriel said, “Of course, I don’t book everything I go out for. I think everyone faces rejection in life regardless of what career you are in, actors just face a little bit more than the rest.”

Also adding, “Honestly, I don’t know if there is any way to deal with that rejection. I just think that you need to move on and focus on the next thing. When you book a job, your focus needs to be there. So I guess, time and hard work get you over the rejection.” And it’s good to hear that he’s got a mature approach to his career so far. Just one more thing to love about him, I suppose.

So what’s next on the horizon for our rising star? A tense, road rage, thriller called “Unhinged”, with actors Russell Crowe and Caren Pistorious! Also, you’ll be able to hear Gabriel’s voice in the new “Playmobil” animated movie! Don’t expect him to slow down any time soon with a schedule like that!

But hey…that just means more Gabriel for the rest of us! That’s a win in my book!
