I know that the year 2020 was a rough and trying time for all of us…and only two weeks into 2021, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be much better. But I still have hope for this year, and you guys should too. So let’s get out from under this storm cloud soon, and start our new year off with a little bit of ‘MAGIC’, huh?
This duo of teens, Lucas Itrawan and Ash Hodgkinson, actually just happened to meet one another in a magic shop when they were younger, and sharing a common interest in the art of performing magic tricks, became fast friends. They began street performing as a two man show in the Pitt Street Mall in Sydney, Australia, when they were only eleven years old. With time, practice, and experience, combining a flare for performing as well as their youthful energy and sense of humor…the pair found themselves being crowned the ‘Australian Junior Close Up Magic Champions’! In just one year?
Ash and Lucas have already become very well established on the Australian entertainment scene. With their expert slight of hand, mind reading tricks, card manipulation, and are even quick enough with a Rubik’s Cube to nearly rival the world speed record for solving it…they quickly caught the eye of other professionals in the magic community. One of them being a very popular Aussie magician by the name of Adam Mada, who immediately took the boys on and began to mentor them in order to point their career in the right direction. Under his tutelage, they have won many more awards for their mind-blowing feats and up close illusions, and were soon put to the test in a showcase where the had to perform within a very limited amount of time.
“We only have ten minutes, which might sound like a lot of time, but for magicians it’s hard because you have to squeeze in amazing tricks.” Lucas says. “We’ve been working on the acts for quite a long time so I hope it goes to plan, but it is the first act that we’ve ever had a quite stern time limit.”
Needless to say…the boys nailed, and kept moving up that magical ladder even further, even scoring a spot on a popular talk show to a much wider audience.
It wasn’t long before Lucas and Ash were able to score their own first ever on-stage show, which they labeled “Double Trouble”. And they definitely worked hard for it, which can’t be easy to work out while stillhaving to keep up with your high school studies.
The boys claim to work on their craft a minimum of three hours a day, every day! Yikes! “It’s just like any sport, you always have to practice.” Lucas says. “You’ve even got to stretch beforehand. It sounds kind of funny, but we always warm up our hands.” Well, if it’s that kind of work ethic that brought them this far…so go for it!
After winning the ‘Sydney Short And Sweet Comedy and Magic Festival’, mentor and producer, Adam Mada was able to set up even more solo shows for the dynamic duo…every last one of them selling out to capacity. And later set up a full fledged ten day tour in India to perform with the rest of his artists, ‘Mada’s Marvels’. The show was funded by the Australia High Commission and India’s Council of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. It was there that they performed for dignitaries and celebrities as well as going back to their roots to bring much life and laughter to the streets for the children living in the surrounding areas.
They’ve got talent…but they’ve also got heart! I love that about them!
After selling out their last award winning show, “Cardistry Cubed”, it’ll be interesting to see where they go next!
