Mike Reviews: The Long Walk by Richard Bachman (Stephen King)

Genre: Mystery / Thriller / Dystopia

This was written by Stephen King under his alter alias ‘Richard Bachman’.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from it, I’ve seen reviews about it suggesting it was anything from it being one of his best, to it being one of his worst.

As for me, after reading it, I have to say, it’s definitely been one of his best. It’s right up there along with IT and Misery.

It’s also one of his darker books, despite their being no supernatural / horror element in the story.

It’s set in a dystopian world where teenage boys are selected each year to compete in an event known as ‘The Walk’.

It’s voluntary to enter and the price for winning is enormous. But once you’re in, you’re in. And there’s only two ways out. You either win, or you leave in a bodybag.

I felt some of familiar tones from his other book ‘The Body’ (aka Stand By Me) in this. Although this one’s far darker, but just as good.

Apparently, it’s King’s first ever story. Not his first ‘published’ work, that credit belongs to Carrie. But I read that King wrote this when he was a similar age to the characters himself.

I don’t want to say too much more, in case I spoil things, but I would absolutely recommend giving this one a go.
